Disobedient, by Elizabeth Fremantle - Paige
I picked up this book based on a recommendation rather than the blurb - I’m glad that’s the case, because I believe I may have avoided this grief-ridden story for fear of upsetting myself; but also because I wouldn’t have been able to keep my naivete alongside Artemisia, until the unthinkable inciting incident occurred.
Artemisia Gentileschi was born to paint; unfortunately, she was also born a woman. Those two things, in 1611 Rome, aren’t a good pairing. She is allowed only to paint to assist her near-washed up father, who is becoming desperate for commissions to paint for high-class figures in society. He is jealous of his daughter’s gift, and with Artemisia’s mother passed, he is also unable to control her wild and progressive thinking.
This story is so atmospheric, I’m delighted I chose to listen to the audiobook - the descriptions of colours and light and wine and art are so delicious, so tempting, that I could barely live without painting as much as Artie could while I was enveloped in it. Whilst listening, I kept Google tabs open on my phone so I could admire her work while I learned of her story. This woman could have so easily been written out of history, if the men of that age had had their way - but she wouldn’t allow it. She was stoic, stubborn, and strong, and I have never admired a woman more in my 30 years of reading.
A caution for the reader: the story is graphic at times, in its depictions of violence, abuse, and torture. Thankfully, Fremantle wrote these scenes with dignity, not with gratuity, and going through the traumas with Artemisia only brings us closer to our heroine. The writing is luscious and rich and addictive, and I was deeply heartbroken when it came to an end - I’m hoping to find more literature about Artemisia Gentileschi and her art to fill that void.
This book is absolutely perfect for fans of “Costanza” by Rachel Blackmore - I feel I’m quite addicted to historical fiction based on Renaissance artists at this point, and I really don’t mind! If you have recommendations of similar works, do let me know.
A stunning read that I will definitely revisit in a few years’ time. Perfection from start to finish.
